funny movies on netflix

From Monty Python and the Holy Grail to Forgetting Sarah Marshall, here are the 19 best comedies on Netflix right now!

The rise of streaming services has revolutionized the way we tickle our funny bones. And leading the charge in this laughter revolution is none other than Netflix.

There are blaxploitation films, like Dolemite is My Name, and even the odd absurdist dramedy like Little Evil, Life of Brian. This list will have romantic comedies, for mainstream audiences, like Forgetting Sarah Marshall, timeless classics, contemporary hits, and international gems like I Used to be Famous.

Movies like Superbad, Scott Pilgrim, and Hot Fuzz are very specific types of humor. They are relatable enough to make the viewer uncomfortable while still understanding the characters and being able to laugh at the insane situations. On the other hand, movies like The Big Short, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs aren’t outright comedies, but the audience is still laughing. The dark comedy is evident in all of these, and the dramatic aspects of them don’t take away from that. Regardless, all these films, along with some kid-friendly and animated films, have made it onto our list

What better than to sit in the comfort of your home and laze away with a good comedy movie? We’ve got you covered if you’re stumped on what to watch. Here’s a list of the funniest movies on Netflix right now.

Best Comedy Movies on Netflix

1. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010)

Source: IMDb

After the successes of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright decided to adapt Bryan Lee O’Malley’s beloved comic books into a brilliant action, romance, and comedy movie. The story follows a young man, Scott Pilgrim, as he battles all seven of her exes to win his crush Ramona’s love.

The editing, visuals, and cinematic style of the film are an absolute treat to watch, and most of the cast has gone on to achieve greater things, like Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Brie Larson, and Chris Evans. And it stars the beloved Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Michael Cera. It’s a very strange movie with wacky, out-of-place elements all put together and made into one perfect script. One of the best comedy movies to come out of Hollywood in the last decade.

2. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

Source: Slant Magazine

The OG comedy, which still gets people laughing till they’re way out of breath. If there was ever a timeless classic, this would be it. Intelligent comedy mixed with ridiculous jokes, the movie still works and still gets you laughing. The irreverent and uproarious masterpiece, created by the iconic British comedy troupe Monty Python, perfectly blends surreal humor, sharp wit, and unforgettable characters.

From the very beginning, the film bombards viewers with non-sequiturs and bizarre twists that leave you equal parts confused and amused. Based on the mythical King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, this movie, low budget as it is, has produced some of the finest moments in cinematic history. That fight with The Black Knight still lives rent-free in our heads. It’s the type of absurd comedy that we don’t see very often anymore. “‘Tis but a flesh wound.”

And if you love it, there’s more where that came from. Look for Monty Python’s Life of Brian, also on Netflix.

3. Superbad (2007)

Source: Mubi

Superbad was the coming-of-age comedy for the 90s kids. It was the movie you’d watch with your bros. It’s got heart, it’s got humor, it’s got d*** jokes. Of all of Judd Apatow’s creations, this one is truly special. The film was lauded for its ability to capture the awkwardness of teenage years with authentic performances from Jonah Hill and Michael Cera that struck a chord with viewers of all ages.

Directed by Greg Mottola, this is a comedy film that takes us on a wild ride through the lives of three high school friends, Seth, Evan, and Fogell, as they navigate the treacherous landscape of adolescence and attempt to secure their spot at the cool kids’ party. Set against the backdrop of their impending high school graduation, the movie explores themes of friendship, teenage angst, and the humorous chaos that ensues when hormones run rampant.

Who knew that the fat kid from Superbad would go on to be a multiple Academy Award nominee? Where has the time gone?

4. Hot Fuzz (2007)

Source: Letterboxd

Edgar Wright stormed into Hollywood with his amazing Shaun of the Dead, and he continued that form with the better, much more funny Hot Fuzz, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost once again. But the director didn’t just look at the comedic element.

Set in the fictional village of Sandford, the film follows an overachieving London police officer, Nicholas Angel (played by Simon Pegg), who is reluctantly transferred to the seemingly idyllic countryside. However, things are not as peaceful as they seem, and Angel soon finds himself amidst a series of bizarre accidents that point to a nefarious plot. Officer Angel’s relentless pursuit of justice and the hilarious dynamic between him and his bumbling partner, PC Danny Butterman (played by Nick Frost) make it an action-thriller-noir-pulp-satire-comedy fusion, and it was absolutely brilliant.

Simon Pegg only complemented Edgar Wright’s ideas with his excellent performance, as well as his writing prowess, forming a formidable duo with the director. Wright could do no wrong.

5. Always Be My Maybe (2019)

The most politically correct rom-com ever, this movie is about diversity, gender equality, and the dynamic of a relationship all rolled into one, and it still manages to be a funny, well-written movie with great characters.

The film follows Sasha Tran (Ali Wong) and Marcus Kim (Randall Park), two best friends who grew up together in San Francisco. After a falling out in their teenage years, they lose touch and go their separate ways. Years later, Sasha, a successful celebrity chef, returns to her hometown for a restaurant opening, where she reunites with Marcus, who lives with his dad and works as a handyman. As they spend time together again, old feelings resurface, and they grapple with the question of whether they should be more than friends.

The whole cast is clearly having a ball. It’s funny, it’s thoughtful, it’s intelligent, and it’s worth a watch. Check this one out. This is a must-watch for anyone in need of a good dose of laughter and romance. Oh, and Keanu Reeves is there, too.

6. The Big Short (2015)

Source: Indiewire

In all fairness, this is a comedy-drama of sorts, but the humor is very evident. Directed by Adam McKay, with an all-star cast of Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, Jonah Hill, Steve Carrel and Brad Pitt, The Big Short is one of the most underrated movies of recent years.

This critically acclaimed film tackles the serious subject of the 2008 financial crisis through a comedic lens, delivering a thought-provoking and entertaining experience. With its brilliant satirical elements, unconventional storytelling techniques, and a stellar ensemble cast, The Big Short creates a unique viewing experience that goes beyond the typical expectations of a comedy.

While it may not be a laugh-out-loud comedy, it turns a real-life event into something of a satire, with some brilliant performances by the lead actors. That coupled with the social commentary makes it an excellent mix of education and entertainment. And if you’re into movies like Wall Street, you’ll love this one.

7. Zombieland (2009)

Source: IMDb

This exaggerated apocalyptic comedy was an instant hit that showed audiences what would happen if  Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin teamed up for the end of the world. It also gave us tips on the many ways to kill a zombie, if the occasion ever called for it. Funny, and scary, with a tinge of romance and not enough of Bill Murray. Still a fun movie to watch. The sequel, 2019’s Zombieland: Double Tap, sees all four actors return and it is just as fun.

What makes Zombieland so special is its ability to be funny while still being genuinely scary. It takes the grim premise of a zombie apocalypse and injects it with a healthy dose of wit and humor. The scares are there, but they’re tempered with clever one-liners, unexpected jokes, and a general sense of self-awareness that keeps the audience laughing even in the face of imminent danger.

8. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

Source: Netflix

A comedy by the Coen Brothers? Yes, please. Known for classics like Fargo and The Big Lebowski, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs will soon join the Coen Bros’ list of timeless classics in a few years. It is an anthology-style movie that presents six short films with distinct stories, each offering a unique perspective on the classic Western theme. From a singing gunslinger to a bank robber with a haunted past, the film takes the audience on a twisted journey through the quirks and tragedies of life on the frontier.

Sure, the comedy isn’t evident, but there are several hints of dark humor and off-beat comedy that are so typical of their style. Not your slapstick comedy, fun for the whole family type, but if you watch this, you just might feel the same way I do about this movie. After all, the Coen Brothers are two of the greatest filmmakers of our time.

In order to win Michael’s heart, Julianne sets out on a comical and sometimes ludicrous journey to sabotage the wedding.

My Best Friend’s Wedding has become a beloved classic in the romantic comedy genre and continues to entertain audiences to this day. It also had an openly gay character, played by an openly gay, actor Rupert Everett, which is a very big deal, especially for the time.

It’s the perfect blend of comedy and disaster, proving that even in the face of imminent doom, there’s always room for a good laugh.

They complain about them night after night, and they decide that the only solution left is to murder their bosses. They plan to help each other, of course.

This movie didn’t need much direction, with Seth Gordon just letting the insanely talented cast, including Charlie Day, Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Jennifer Aniston, loose and let them do their thing.
